Stand Light Boxes

Are Stand Lights More Effective?

In a number of light therapy studies during the 90's, as well as many involving Apollo's light boxes, stand lights were found to be more effective than lightboxes at eye level. The difference was not extremely significant, but researchers also felt that light above the head was easier to use and patients enjoyed them more. As a result, for more than a decade, Apollo dutifully sold stands with their light therapy products.

Consumer Revolt

Interestingly, what researchers perceived as better therapy was not what consumers wanted for home use. During the 90's, Apollo received several complaints about how stand lights made light therapy very difficult to adapt to normal routines. Because of size requirements, stand lights typically require that the light be stationary on a desk or table, and patients did not like having to dedicate extra time to sit under a stand light. We found that sometimes, what works in an outpatient clinical setting does not always translate well to home use.

Making Non-Stand Lights More Effective

After conferring with our researchers, we determined that the added benefit of stand lights was not significant enough to warrant selling them. In addition, Apollo began designing lights that were much more portable, yet still delivered a larger treatment field of light. Today, our light boxes still yield the highest response rates. They weigh much less and produce a more effective treatment field than any other light device on the market.
